All Websites Needs - SEO

SEO is an acronym for "search engine optimization" or "search engine optimizer." Deciding to hire an SEO is a big decision that can potentially improve your site and save time, but you can also risk damage to your site and reputation. Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site. Many SEOs and other agencies and consultants provide useful services for website owners, including:

Review of your site content or structure
Technical advice on website development: for example, hosting, redirects, error pages, use of JavaScript
Content development
Management of online business development campaigns
Keyword research
SEO training
Expertise in specific markets and geographies.
Keep in mind that the Google search results page includes organic search results and often paid advertisement (denoted by the heading "Sponsored Links") as well. Advertising with Google won't have any effect on your site's presence in our search results. Google never accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results, and it costs nothing to appear in our organic search results. Free resources such as Webmaster Tools, the official Webmaster Central blog, and our discussion forum can provide you with a great deal of information about how to optimize your site for organic search. Many of these free sources, as well as information on paid search, can be found on Google Webmaster Central.

Before beginning your search for an SEO, it's a great idea to become an educated consumer and get familiar with how search engines work. We recommend starting here:

Google Webmaster Guidelines
Google 101: How Google crawls, indexes and serves the web.
If you're thinking about hiring an SEO, the earlier the better. A great time to hire is when you're considering a site redesign, or planning to launch a new site. That way, you and your SEO can ensure that your site is designed to be search engine-friendly from the bottom up. However, a good SEO can also help improve an existing site.

Some useful questions to ask an SEO include:

Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories?
Do you follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines?
Do you offer any online marketing services or advice to complement your organic search business?
What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? How do you measure your success?
What's your experience in my industry?
What's your experience in my country/city?
What's your experience developing international sites?
What are your most important SEO techniques?
How long have you been in business?
How can I expect to communicate with you? Will you share with me all the changes you make to my site, and provide detailed information about your recommendations and the reasoning behind them?
While SEOs can provide clients with valuable services, some unethical SEOs have given the industry a black eye through their overly aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to manipulate search engine results in unfair ways. Practices that violate our guidelines may result in a negative adjustment of your site's presence in Google, or even the removal of your site from our index. Here are some things to consider:

Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you email out of the blue.
Amazingly, we get these spam emails too:

"Dear google.com,
I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories..."
Reserve the same skepticism for unsolicited email about search engines as you do for "burn fat at night" diet pills or requests to help transfer funds from deposed dictators.

No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a "special relationship" with Google, or advertise a "priority submit" to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is through our Add URL page or by submitting a Sitemap and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.

Be careful if a company is secretive or won't clearly explain what they intend to do.
Ask for explanations if something is unclear. If an SEO creates deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, such as doorway pages or "throwaway" domains, your site could be removed entirely from Google's index. Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire, so it's best to be sure you know exactly how they intend to "help" you.

You should never have to link to an SEO.
Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of "free-for-all" links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These are typically useless exercises that don't affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines -- at least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive.

Choose wisely.
While you consider whether to go with an SEO, you may want to do some research on the industry. Google is one way to do that, of course. You might also seek out a few of the cautionary tales that have appeared in the press, including this article on one particularly aggressive SEO: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002002970_nwbizbriefs12.html. While Google doesn't comment on specific companies, we've encountered firms calling themselves SEOs who follow practices that are clearly beyond the pale of accepted business behavior. Be careful.

Be sure to understand where the money goes.
While Google never sells better ranking in our search results, several other search engines combine pay-per-click or pay-for-inclusion results with their regular web search results. Some SEOs will promise to rank you highly in search engines, but place you in the advertising section rather than in the search results. A few SEOs will even change their bid prices in real time to create the illusion that they "control" other search engines and can place themselves in the slot of their choice. This scam doesn't work with Google because our advertising is clearly labeled and separated from our search results, but be sure to ask any SEO you're considering which fees go toward permanent inclusion and which apply toward temporary advertising.

What are the most common abuses a website owner is likely to encounter?
One common scam is the creation of "shadow" domains that funnel users to a site by using deceptive redirects. These shadow domains often will be owned by the SEO who claims to be working on a client's behalf. However, if the relationship sours, the SEO may point the domain to a different site, or even to a competitor's domain. If that happens, the client has paid to develop a competing site owned entirely by the SEO.

Another illicit practice is to place "doorway" pages loaded with keywords on the client's site somewhere. The SEO promises this will make the page more relevant for more queries. This is inherently false since individual pages are rarely relevant for a wide range of keywords. More insidious, however, is that these doorway pages often contain hidden links to the SEO's other clients as well. Such doorway pages drain away the link popularity of a site and route it to the SEO and its other clients, which may include sites with unsavory or illegal content.

Internet Marketing - Online

One of our readers, Mike, recently wrote us to ask, "As a total IM newbie, would it be better for me to start with a regular website or on Ebay?"

Excellent question, Mike.

There are pros and cons with both eBay businesses and regular Internet marketing businesses. Both can lead to successful online careers. But which one is best depends on YOU -- your skill set, your personality, what you want from your online business and so on.

Here are some tips to help you figure out if you're better suited for a "regular" Internet business -- or have the entrepreneurial mindset of a successful eBay seller...

You should consider starting with eBay if you:

Have ZERO computer skills -- With eBay, you don't have to know the first thing about website design or HTML to get started. eBay provides you with all the easy-to-use tools you need to list your items for auction and start selling right away.

Can't spend a huge amount of time up-front on your business -- A regular Internet business takes a lot of time to set up -- as much as 40 hours a week if you want to get it off the ground in a month or two.

But with eBay, you can skip a lot of the set-up process and get started almost overnight!

CAN spend a few hours on your business, several days a week -- To be a successful eBay seller, you have to make it part of your weekly routine.

You need to set aside some time to source your products, create your listings, and prepare your items for shipment (assuming you're not using a drop shipper). None of these chores takes a huge amount of time -- but they MUST be done consistently if you want your eBay business to thrive.

Don't have much money to spend up front -- With eBay, you don't have to pay for things like hosting, web design (assuming you're not going to do it yourself), product development, or advertising.

It only costs a dollar or two to set up a regular eBay auction listing -- how's that for a low start-up cost?

Are looking for a steady, reliable source of income -- eBay businesses -- unlike "regular" ones -- aren't affected by external factors such as algorithm changes by the search engines.

With a regular business, you can be sitting pretty in the #1 spot for your best keywords -- then find yourself dropped to the 40th page of results overnight! (If you're a smart search marketer, you can drastically reduce the chances of this happening to you. But it does take a lot of time and effort to stay on top of what's happening in the search engine world.)

Want to start making money RIGHT AWAY! You can get your items listed on eBay and start making money TODAY, if you want. You won't make a million dollars overnight, but you can achieve a dependable stream of income in a very short time.
Does that sound like you? Compare it to the alternative...

You should consider starting with a "regular" Internet business if you:

Know your way around a computer -- You certainly don't HAVE to have any computer skills to start your own Internet marketing business, but it helps. At the very least, it shortens the amount of time you have to spend learning how to set up and market your business.

Are eager to learn a LOT of new stuff in a very short time -- This goes hand in hand with our first point. Unless you're already a marketing savvy computer genius, you will have a fairly steep learning curve ahead of you.

(But then, most successful online business owners think that's all part of the fun.)

Are prepared to spend a LOT of time on your business in the initial development stages -- Yes, some people are able to have an online business up and running in a matter of days. But these tend to be people who are computer savvy and already know the basics of Internet marketing, or take part in an accelerated success clinic like our 5-Day Extreme Business Launching Clinic.

.... Or they're just lucky. That certainly happens, too.

But if you don't know the first thing about keyword research, HTML, web design, copywriting, or marketing strategies like pay-per-click and search engine optimizing, launching your business will probably take several months of round-the-clock work.

Love the idea of setting a business up... and then just walking away -- This is where all that hard work proves worth it!

Unlike an eBay business, which requires regular work on a weekly basis, once your "regular" Internet business is fully set up, you can automate it almost completely and it'll keep churning out the profits whether you've got your hands on the wheel or not.
... As you can see, both options have their pros and cons. (We'd say the pros outweigh the cons in both cases, though!)

5. Forget You Own Your Website

It's important to review your website once in a while to spot "holes" in your real estate Internet marketing strategy. This article tells you how to view your site like a stranger. (December 27, 2006)

13. Blog Regularly

A real estate blog can help support your Internet marketing goals in many ways. A blog can inform readers, add size and value to your website, generate leads, and keep search engines coming back to visit — all at the same time. (January 13, 2007)

14. Blog On Your Own Website

if you're about to start using Blogger, WordPress or Movable Type for the first time, it's best to publish the blog onto your own website, rather than under the blog company's domain. Find out why (January 13, 2007)

15. Add Your Blog to Directories

Real estate Internet marketing should involve multiple channels. For maximum online exposure and lead generation, strive to combine as many online and offline marketing channels as possible. (January 16, 2007)

Promotional Marketing Ideas

  1. Offer something free:
    • A consultation
    • A gift
    • Seminars
    • Product Demonstration
  2. Distribute cards where the customer gets something free after a certain number of purchases.
  3. Have a sale
  4. Cross promote in or on products of other businesses that target your market. You can get creative with this one. How about an optician partnering with a book store. Put large print flyers in books that say, "Having trouble reading the text? Come see us." and small print notes in new eye glass cases that reads, "Put your new glasses to good use..."
  5. Offer a discount to a target group:
    • Offer special pricing to a specific club
    • Offer a discount to event attendees
    • Give out coupons for the completion of a survey
  6. Have a special promotion just for your best customers.
  7. Hold a contest.
  8. Place balloons outside of your store.
  9. Make a decorative scene on the top of or inside your store.
  10. Hold an event outside your store or invite a non-profit group to hold an even outside your store.
  11. Place a sign on top of or on the sides of your car while parked near your place of business.
  12. Have a banner printed to announce a special sale or promotion.
  13. Have ready-to-launch promotions stored up for when neighboring stores have a large advertised sale so you can catch some of the extra traffic.
  14. Offer samples or refreshments in your store.

Print Marketing Ideas

  1. Design attractive business cards:
    • Hand out your business card to anyone who may need to contact you.
    • Give those close to you, business wise or personally a few business cards so they can hand them out when they meet someone in need of your product.

Very Interesting

Sometime in the New Year, the city will be holding an open house to unveil the ideas brought her bChris Fields—ideas on branding the city to attract investors, tourists and resident to Castlegar.

Before the open house takes place, though, I have a plea—please, oh please, keep your eyes on the prize as you judge what’s on offer.

There are two fundamental rules that apply to both journalism and marketing: you have a maximum of 10 seconds to nab your reader’s attention before it strays elsewhere, and; know your audience.

Think of an auditorium that’s full to capacity, but in which the performance has not yet begun. All the slogans, taglines, advertisements, billboards and ballcaps we see and hear every day are like the buzz of conversation in the auditorium—they all blend into a single, inarticulate hum from which you might garner a word or two here or there, but never any meaning.

Marketing, like headlines, should be the shouted, “Hey you!” in that auditorium that makes everyone (or at least those within earshot) stand up and take notice—without it, no matter how good or well crafted your message, you simply won’t be heard.

This is why branding matters—it’s the hey-you that sets you (or your city) out from the crowd. You don’t have to like the phrase, or consider the yelling approach a true reflection of yourself—you just have to get everyone’s attention so they’ll hear what you have to say.

This is true of branding as well. You may be conservative, mild, even a little timid—but if your branding reflects that, then you’ve wasted time, money and resources branding yourself at all.

“We have pretty rivers and trees,” may be true enough, but at the end of the day, it won’t be noticed and your city will fade into oblivion, if it hasn’t already. So when you head to the open house, don’t focus on whether the advertisements give you a warm, fuzzy feeling, or even whether they describe Castlegar as you know it—instead, ask yourself if they hit that hey-you high that will make them effective and meaningful in a global media auditorium long since full past capacity.

The Marketing Relevance Imperative

Unprecedented access to information and new technologies have empowered consumers and business buyers with the ability to tune out marketing messages with ease. In most cases, when given the choice, they choose to skip these messages. Whether it's using Tivo to zap television commercials or software to block online ads and email marketing, they're sending a message to all marketers: get relevant or we'll ignore you. While the noise level of marketing messages reaches an all time high and audiences become more and more fragmented, some marketers have reacted by turning up the volume and, at times, engaging in practices with questionable ethics, while others have chosen to become more relevant.
